Just as mighty trees grow from little seeds, Rush Copley is helping our tiniest patients grow up strong and healthy. The two beneficiaries of the event include:
The Rush Copley Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where newborns receive intensive medical attention due to birth defects and prematurity. A renovation project is currently underway to provide all private rooms for our NICU patients. Part of the project will include a Parent Resource Room. The room will be a calming and nurturing environment – a retreat, where parents can grab a snack or a drink, read a book, use the computer, scrapbook or even watch a movie. The room will also house the “book mobile” for the NICU’s shared reading program, giving parents an opportunity to borrow a variety of books throughout their baby’s stay that can be read to them at the bedside. The funds will also support giving books suitable for babies and toddlers to the families of these tiny patients.
The Lynn Barclay Big Heart Family Fund, which provides health and safety equipment like car seats, thermometers and play yards to our neediest young patients and their families. This Fund likewise includes a focus on the importance of reading by partnering with the wonderful Reach Out and Read, an evidence-based nonprofit organization. The leaders of this program (physicians and staff) promote early literacy and school readiness in the pediatric office by providing a free book on every visit from 6-months through 5 years of age!
This common thread, the therapeutic value of reading to our little ones, is not an accident. Studies have shown that one of the most important things parents can do to positively influence a child’s development is to spend quiet time reading together. Not only does this activity lay the groundwork for things like improved concentration, cognition and imagination, it helps create a strong sense of trust and intimacy as essential to a child’s well-being as check-ups and immunizations.
The NICU Parent Resource Room and the Lynn Barclay Big Heart Family Fund both operate completely on contributions. That’s where you – a loyal supporter of Rush Copley – can be most helpful. Your donation will help weave safety nets and build strong family bonds for children and infants in the greatest need. To help our tiny seeds grow into the mighty trees they were born to be.
