”Sweetener”—Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande has come a long way since her Nickelodeon roots, and her music has matured along the way. She’s already set the summer on fire and released an all-season hit with the track “God is a Woman” and its powerful music video. But Grande’s also come a long way since the deadly UK terror attack that occurred immediately following a May 2017 tour date at Manchester Arena, leaving 500 injured, 23 dead and Ariana scarred. But Sweetener, due to be released on Friday, August 17th, is a reflection of the year that’s passed, and a promise to continue persevering. See her video for “God is a Woman” below.
”Thank You for Today”—Death Cab for Cutie
Death Cab for Cutie has always been an inspired band, with both layered melodies and syncopated grooves equally abundant throughout their catalog. But a band spawning as many decades as Death Cab has sees the pendulum swing to both sides by this point, and after releasing seven albums that each pushed the band’s musical boundaries to uncharted grounds, they ended up somewhere around their roots. Death Cab for Cutie’s eighth album, Thank You for Today, is due for release on Friday, August 17th–nearly 20 years to the day since the band’s first release—and revisits much of the ground first laid on that debut. Thank You for Today’s first single, “Gold Rush” is streaming everywhere and you can see the video below.
”Is This Thing Cursed?”—Alkaline Trio
New music from Alkaline Trio is finally here! Since singer-songwriter Matt Skiba joined Blink 182’s ranks in 2015, Alkaline Trio has continued to tour but has been without a new full length album since 2013’s My Shame is True. Despite balancing both bands full-time, Skiba has claimed to have been writing new Alkaline Trio material as far back as 2016 while touring with Blink, and Is This Thing Cursed?, set for release on Friday, August 31st, is the fruition of these efforts. Check out the album’s first single, “Blackbird”, below.
